AI wave anxiety
It’s pretty clear that we’re at the beginning of the AI era within the Computing Age. The first two eras can be roughly called the Microprocessor era and the Web era. There were a lot of trends within each era that we can look into with a better lens, like mobile computing, the social web, crypto currencies or the rise of JavaScript, etc.
In each of these phases, anyone firmly grasped at the pulse of the industry, feels a little anxious. Whenever better technology comes along, you’re expected to (a) either learn how to leverage it to offer better value in the marketplace or (b) take on the risk of being replaced by someone who does.
With the rise of AI, I’m observing this feeling with developers on the most developer-focused platforms. I’ve seen threads on HN on how to cope being a developer as LLMs get more powerful. I’ve seen tweets on X about how developers as an occupation might cease to exist in 2-5 years. While the average developer is still busy figuring out how to write decent enough code that they can remain employed, the stalwarts of our industry are talking about existential risks.
So, it’s quite natural that some developers are anxious.
However, no one really knows what will happen for sure. It’s only looking backwards that we’re able to connect the dots confidently. At this point in time, any curious developer willing to invest in educating themself, stands at the precipice of a grand opportunity. In 2025, I’m looking forward to spending my efforts on creating more content around this very topic.
