Recent Standup Comedy Specials

A bit on the lighter side of things, here’s some of the standup specials I’ve enjoyed recently. I’m always up for watching some standup, and discovering new comedians whom I can reliably turn to for a laugh in the future. Here’s some specials I saw recently:

  • Nikki Glaser’s Someday You’ll Die was absolutely hilarious. I first saw how funny Nikki was during her appearances on JRE, and then I became a fan because of her epic roasts. I consider her to be on the very top of her game right now and very much look forward to what’s next!
  • Matt Rife’s Lucid – A Crowd Work Special was such a wholesome and surprisingly, funny show. I saw it with the wife (she’s not a fan of some of the more edgier comedians) and even she had a great time. Matt’s a genuine charmer and it was not only a good class in crowd work and improv, there were proper LOL moments in there.
  • Brian Simpson’s Live From The Mothership is best enjoyed super high (like the comedian himself) and you will enjoy it! This was my first time watching Simpson, having known he was a regular at Joe’s new comedy club in Austin (which is featured in this special), so I knew what I was in for – but even then, I was bowled over by Simpson and look forward to more from him in the future.
  • Deon Cole’s OK, Mister and Cole Hearted because I watched the former as an introduction to his unique flavour of comedy and then couldn’t get enough of him! I have bits memorised (like “WAP 4” 😂) that I will reference in the future with a huge smile on my face. Highly recommended!
  • Ellen’s For Your Approval was a bomb. I’ve never been an Ellen fan, but I don’t like cancel culture, so I wanted to give this a shot. She had some funny bits, but the overall theme felt really superficial and insincere.
